Prayer is used in widely differing spiritual and religious traditions. Babuji Maharaj has said that prayer, as it has been traditionally approached, is begging. We have approached God, like a beggar, asking for wealth, success, material gain, and so on. In Sahaj Marg, as the Mission Prayer reflects, our view of prayer is quite different from this traditional focus. In our system prayer is used, in Babuji's words, "to establish our relationship with the Holy Divine".

The Sahaj Marg Prayer is a crucial element of the meditation practice, because when we say it before meditation in the morning, it connects us to the Divine, the Source; and when we recite it at bedtime we reinforce our connection to the Divine, with the idea of maintaining the link in our sub-conscious throughout the night. In this way we are learning to stay in remembrance of God, the Divine, for twenty-four hours per day.

The Mission Prayer:

Oh! Master!
Thou art the real goal of human life,
We are yet but slaves of wishes
Putting bar to our advancement,
Thou art the only God and power
To bring us up to that stage.
